Most Common Questions

Below is a list of our most common questions. Please look through the list before emailing me a question about your hair. If your question is not listed email me at sam(at)growblackhair(dot)net. Please note, I do not have time to mentor each person individually concerning their haircare needs. Most of your questions are answered on this very site within the articles on the blog, website, etc. I strongly urge you to do a search on this site for your haircare concern before contacting me personally.

  • How can I make my hair grow faster?
    • You can't make your hair grow any faster than it does naturally. There are no pills or greases that will make your hair grow faster. It really depends on your genetics of how fast your hair will grow. All hair grows an average of 1/2 inch per month. What you can do is take the necessary steps to keep your hair from breaking so it can gain length.
  • I'm having a lot of breakage and shedding. How can I stop it?
    • If you are having severe breakage and shedding, protein is the key to solving this problem. The Aphogee Two-Step Protein Treatment conditioner is located in the Grow Black Hair Shop will help stop the breakage. After you rinse out the protein completely apply a moisturizer to restore your moisture balance because protein can be very drying. Also remember to sleep with a satin bonnet or scarf. Comb your hair with a wide tooth comb, reduce the amount of heat you use in your hair, and moisturize your hair two times a day.
  • Does clipping the ends make the hair grow faster?
    • No. Clipping the ends has nothing to do with hair growth. Use common sense, hair is dead and it doesn't spout a new piece of hair when you cut it. Clipping the ends every six weeks or so actually keeps you from gaining length.
  • What type of shampoo should I use in my hair?
    • For relaxed hair and natural hair use a gentle sulfate free shampoo. African American hair should never be cleansed with shampoos containing sulfates.
  • Is it okay to use hair oil as a moisturizer?
    • No. Hair oil will seal moisture into your hair, but it doesn't moisturize the hair. You should use a hair lotion or cream such as the Organic Root Stimulator Carrot Oil or the Curls Milkshake. Next follow up with coconut, jojoba, or olive oil to seal the moisture into your hair.
  • Are products that contain parabens damaging to African American hair?
    • I have used products containing these ingredients for years and I haven't had any issues with these particular ingredients which are preservatives to prevent growth of bacteria and fungi in cosmetic products which can become a more serious issue. Most products that use these ingredients use very little of this ingredient anyways, so the "so-called" damage is next to none.
  • Are shampoo's that contain sodium lauryl sulfate harsh to our hair?
    • Yes. Sodium Laurly (Laureth) Sulfate is nothing more than a soaping agent used to cleanse the hair. Shampoo's containing these ingredients can be used for clarifying the hair once a month, but I no longer recommend the use of shampoo that contains sulfates, because it can strip African American hair of it's moisture. If you need to clarify the hair from excessive buildup try using the Kinky-Curly Shampoo and mix it with one 1TSP of baking soda.
